The organic-food movement has grown in fits and starts since its birth in the 1940s. In recent years, the value of producing food without the use of potentially harmful chemicals has re-emerged in the public consciousness.

Non-organic farmers may use risky fertilizers and pesticides to help grow many of the foods we eat: grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat. However, organic farmers address problems – mainly, livestock disease and weed and pest control – with alternative solutions rather than chemicals.
